This comes with the territory. Indeed, many of us will struggle with what ‘shell schemes’ are – a basic exhibition stand space. What ‘trackers’ are – machines that scan and print visitor labels, not to mention what ‘floods’ are – a form of lighting to highlight an expansive space, or even what a ‘Foamex board’ is – compressed foam typically used for signage. However the difference between what are traditionally considered to be the same product is subtle. Here we’ll clarify for you:

A Banner Stand

A banner stand is a portable display unit that has being designed to carry a graphic, branding or corporate message. The reason for the definition as a banner is that the product is an advertising tool – showing off how your brand should look. The idea is to grab the attention of passersby. Therefore, all imagery and copy should be direct and positive.

Banner stands are considered to be lightweight and easy to set-up. Indeed, banner stands can be assembled by a single person in a matter of minutes, as well as being transported easily to different locations.

A Pop-Up Stand

A pop-up stand is a similar portable display unit, and like banner stands, works as an effective form of advertising. There are a number of fundamental differences, as outlined below:

Firstly, pop-up stands are typically two to three meters wide (banners are usually 800mm to 850mm.) If banner stands could be compared to an advertising strip, banners are wallpaper. They allow advertisers to make a bigger impression in a number of different environments.

Secondly, the mechanics of a pop-up stands are entirely different. You need only open the frame and, as per the name, the ‘pop-up’ will spring out.

Thirdly, Pop-up stands offer a choice of hook graphics (those that fit over the top of the stand) or magnetic graphics that click into place on magnetised slots.

Finally, consumers have a choice of straight-edged stands or curved stands.

These are the fundamental differences between banner and pop-up stands. Consumers are advised to consider their individual application before selecting which stand is best for their purpose.

If you’re new to exhibitions, you may need to get used to some jargon.
